I’m not a fan of PETA… no I don’t condone hurting animals, but I think they take it to the other extreme.
First, a letter from them to the sheriff’s office holding John Karr asking them to feed him an exclusively vegetarian diet. After all, many violent sociopaths start off by abusing animals (yes true, yes sick) and they suggest that feeding inmates strictly vegetarian diets could help them lose their taste for blood. Yeah. Okay.
Brian pointed out a line to me as well… “Nonviolence begins in the kitchen” His response: ok, so no more smashing me on the head with a frying pan.
Another favorite line: “Feeding inmates bean burritos rather than baby back ribs might just help break the cycle of violence.”
I also have my suspicions that they’re somehow connected to a Nick Jr show called Wonder Pets. 3 pets in an elementary school class become much more once the kids all leave. They answer the call from other animals in trouble. Some have included a baby dolphin caught in a fisher’s net. Another was a monkey that was lost in space. Both of which have been PETA campaigns. Anyway, they go to the animal in trouble and save the day (teaching teamwork and respect for others, to quote the Nick Jr site). It’s actually a cute little show. Pretty much all the dialogue is sung – which Taylor & I enjoy doing from time to time. And, if PETA is involved it’s still a cute show.
Here’s another ridiculous PETA story fer ya:

I think PETA is a good idea in principle but any good idea starts to go awry when fanatics get a hold of it.
And wasn’t Hitler a vegetarian?
It’s stories like these that make me want to crack open a beer and grill a nice big juicy steak.
I’m with you Paige. I’m all for keeping people from kicking their cats across the room or starving their dogs. These outlandish comments may just be a way to ensure they get noticed. If that’s the case, they’re successful. But when you have digressed to the point where the mention of your organization’s name is in itself a punchline to jokes, you’re doing your cause more harm than good.
