April 30 - Cologne
Pictures of the front of the cathedral. This was the first German Gothic cathedral. Construction began in 1248 and was completed in 1880 - 632 years! It was the largest at first but, by the time it was finished, there were others that were larger. However, it is the tallest cathedral. The facade is also the largest - 700 square feet. It weighs approximately 300,000 tons and has 509 steps to the roof. There are 10,000 square meters of stained glass. If you look at the construction, you may notice that all the lines are vertical - minimal horizontal lines. This was so the people see everything pointing to heaven. The goal of cathedral building was to have a little "heaven on earth" And there were relics! This cathedral holds the relics of the Three Wise Men. The Archbishop demanded the relics from Milan after their city had been destroyed.
